Welcome offers guide — read the bonus, not the headline.

“Up to £500 + 200 spins” is the headline. The terms underneath decide whether the offer is worth your time. This guide walks through the six things UK readers should check on any welcome bonus before depositing — and applies them to current offers from UKGC casinos.

Bonus literacy

Six checks before you click “claim”.

If a welcome offer fails any of these checks, it doesn’t automatically mean the casino is bad — it usually means the offer is built for a different style of player. Read past the headline and decide.

Step 1

Find the wagering multiplier

A 30× wagering requirement on a £20 bonus means £600 must be staked before the bonus converts. Lower is better. Anything above 50× is hard work.

Step 2

Check the maximum bet during bonus

Most UK operators cap your stake at £2 to £5 per spin or hand while a bonus is active. Going over the cap usually voids the bonus and any winnings tied to it.

Step 3

Read the game weighting table

Slots typically count 100% toward wagering. Live blackjack might count 10%, or sometimes 0%. The weighting table decides whether you can clear the bonus on the games you actually want to play.

Step 4

Look at the expiry window

Welcome offers usually expire in 7 to 30 days. A short window with high wagering is a red flag — you would need to play far more than you planned just to keep the bonus alive.

Step 5

Check the minimum qualifying deposit

“Up to £100” often requires a £20 minimum to trigger any bonus at all. The headline number is the maximum you could earn, not what most players will get.

Step 6

Decide if it’s worth it

If the maths only works at the very top end of the offer, it might not be a useful bonus for you. A smaller, low-wagering offer is often better value than a flashy one with strict terms.

Worked example

Three current UK welcome offers, side by side.

All three are at UKGC-licensed operators. Terms shown are the public headline only — always read the operator’s own bonus terms before depositing.

One last thing

A welcome offer is a marketing tool. It is built to bring you through the door, not to make you money. Treat the bonus as a small extra on top of a deposit you would have made anyway — never as a reason to deposit more than you planned.

If you ever feel a bonus is pushing you to chase, close the offer. Free, confidential help is available from GamCare and BeGambleAware.
